‘At a timber merchant’s I was offered a fairly over-painted slab of very heavy indeterminate timber. “This is a bit of wood we took from a farmhouse we demolished a while back.” How much, I asked. “Oh you can have it”, he said, “I was going to burn it as firewood anyway”. The use of an antique piece of timber that turned out to be a very attractive was a bonus for my customer’s commission.’
