Arts &
Crafts style secretaire
‘The inspiration
for this piece was the design of glass
panels in the doors of the top cupboard.
These were discovered in a Ballina antique
store some 15–20 years ago and have
a special significance because the monogram
includes the maker’s three initials.
The mirrors were stored with the intention
of making them into a specially designed
furniture piece, in this case a secretaire
in the manner of C.F.A Voysey or Gustav
Stickley both of whom made writing desks
especially for their wives to use.
‘William
Morris is famous for his advice to ‘Have
nothing in your houses that you do no
know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful’.
It is my hope that this piece fully satisfies
both criteria.
