Large Flat Top
Australian pine, meranti, MDF
385 w x 151 h x 225mm d
This jewellery
box has some interesting features. The
top of the box contains two hidden compartments
that split into eight smaller compartments.
When the top is opened, the lid is held
in place by the handle which twists into
a vertical position, so that it is flat
when access to the hidden compartments
is required.
The timber used for the lower, outer part
of the box, the top and the handle, is
Australian pine. I have used standard
manufactured timber cut to size. The joints
used for the top are 45 degree butt joints
which are nailed, but are also held in
place by the steel top and four steel
angle irons which are hidden when the
lids to the compartments are in place.
The inner drawers use meranti for the
main part of their construction, and 3mm
MDF for the bases. They all use butt joints
and are all nailed. All the timber is
painted in two coats of Cabot’s
oil based clear polyurethane. The trim
used throughout is Nylex stick on suede
cut to size.
The outer shell is 1mm mild steel which
is painted in enamel. All fixings are
polished stainless steel. The legs are
5/8 polished mild steel thread and the
feet are chromed dome nuts. Hinges are
also stainless steel. The edging is all
12 x 3mm aluminium which is hand polished.
All work is done by hand.
Concept
The concept of my designs is to create
non-traditional style jewellery boxes
that combine beautiful timber (whether
it is expensive or not) boldly coloured
steel and very industrial materials, perhaps
even recycled. The designs themselves
should also use interesting shapes, angles
and if possible have quirky features such
as the Large Flat Top. The overall result
being as functional yet as artistic as
possible.
