Lindsay Ikin, Mt Beauty, VIC

Concept:
This entry is a jewellery box I made for my granddaughter, hence the name on the top of the box.

Materials:
It is made from a solid piece of birdseye fiddleback redgum. The timber came from my mates place. He has a farm at Gandouring on the Kiewa River, which is redgum country.

Method of Construction:
I first shaped the piece then separated the top from the base with a bandsaw. The inside of the tip and the base were carved out with a small Carba-tec cutting wheel, then sanded down by hand with various grades of sandpaper until it became smooth.
I carved my granddaughters name on the lid and filled it with Timbermate neutral wood filler to make it stand out against the redgum. The outer surface of the piece was finished with fine emery paper, with three coats of Feast Watson weatherproof clear gloss applied. The inner section was primed and coated with Timbecon royal blue flocking powder.
The piece is fitted with antique reproduction hinges and catch (brass).
