Jarrah burl, mineritchi, green ripple
abalone, birch ply
280 x 210 x 85mm
I made this
box to develop my bandsawn veneering skills
and to use some exquisite reclaimed jarrah
burl that I had been given. The things
I make from wood are a vehicle to showcase
the wonderful colours available from this
natural resource and as such I endeavour
to keep the panels flat and to frame the
featured wood with edgebanding in the
way that a picture is framed.
The box is covered with veneer made from
jarrah root burl and is decorated with
mineritchi (a West Australian desert acacia)
and green ripple abalone. The trays are
also made from mineritchi and are lined
with lilac suede. The carcase is birch
ply and has book matched veneers glued
with epoxy on all surfaces, inside and
out.
The cross grain edgebanding was custom
made for the box. The veneers were glued
to all of the faces and the internal surfaces
were polished prior to the box being assembled.
It is finished with traditional French
polish. The corner joints of the carcase
are mitres which were reinforced with
vertical splines. The drawer has a custom
made cable activated latch and is triggered
when the lid is opened. I also made the
tray handles from brass tube and rod.
