Rob Fitzclarence, Bermagui, NSW

Method of construction: Chisel carved
Finish: Shellac
Concept:
My objective was to tie a knot in a piece of wood. This was achieved by carving a reef knot from a piece of cypress 460 x 120 x 200mm. A 50mm piece from the base of the knot is removable and the knot is set into another block of cypress 180 x 70 x 440mm, so that the knot can ‘untie’, thus revealing a recessed cavity at either end, measuring 100 x 50 x 40mm. When the knot is closed, the cavity is concealed providing two hidden ‘boxes’.
