David Field, Heathcote, NSW

Materials:
All material was selected for its hardness, colour and texture. The final desired effect was rustic and weathered.
Base: Recovered, weathered Tasmanian oak,
Lid: Recovered, weathered Tasmanian oak and purple gidgee,
Ring: Silver – hand crafted.
Lining: royal blue flocking.
The Tasmanian oak was recovered from a fallen fence post. The purple gidgee was sourced from Trend Timbers.
Joinery
Lid and Base: The lid and base are turned.
Ring: The ring is made from silver sheet. The raised section is made by rolling a short length of sheet around brass wire before forming a silver wire approximately 2mm diameter. This wire is then attached to a rectangular piece of silver sheet and soldered in place. All of this is then formed into the final ring and polished.
Glues:
I have used two part epoxy to assemble the lid.
Finishes:
I finished the work with tung oil, french polish (Feast Watson) and wax (Gilly Stephenson’s Cabinet Makers Wax and then Carnauba Wax).
Concept:
'Old wood has a mood and a yarn. Listen to it and it will guide the tools if you let it.' David Field.
