Spiral Shell Jewellery
Box
Jarrah, Huon pine
320 x 200 x 140mm
Method
of Construction:
It is constructed with adjoining fillets
of jarrah and Huon pine, with finger-jointing
at the corners. There is a lower drawer
for larger items of jewellery, and an
upper space with two removable trays for
smaller items. The lid is of huon pine.
It is finished with shellac and beeswax.
Concept:
The box was a gift for my niece’s
21st birthday. The carving on the lid
is a spiral shell pattern, using the Fibonacci
sequence as a model. I used this pattern
as my niece has a large necklace of a
similar shape, and so I thought she would
enjoy the effect. She has also spent time
in Africa, and so I decided to line the
drawer and trays with ostrich hide as
a reminder of Africa.
