This
AWR competition is about
demonstrating the strength
and sustainability of
Australian hardwoods,
and how clever design
coupled with expert
timber selection and
furniture construction
can allow us to use
our forest resources
more wisely.
Here are some facts
to keep in mind:
•
Australian hardwood
species are known for
their strength as well
as their beauty. Smaller
sections can deliver
appropriate strength
for use in furniture
componentry.
•
If designers and makers
can create a demand
for smaller sized wood,
the demand for larger,
‘clear’
sections can be reduced
enabling more efficient
use of processed timber.
•
Larger sections of wood
are getting hard to
come by (and they are
harder to dry without
degrade), so we need
to make better use of
available resources.
•
Some stocks of ‘specialty’,
ie less commonly occurring
species (note: usually
having incredibly beautiful
wood) can only be obtained
in smaller sizes.

| THE
CHALLENGE |
 |
 |
 |
Design
and make a piece of furniture, joinery
or a decorative object from solid
Australian native hardwood. The
maximum sections can be:
•
70mm width x 20mm thickness.
But you can use other sizes, for
example, 42 x 19mm, 19 x 19mm, 15
x 12mm
•
Other wood or wood products
such as plywood of MDF may be used,
but only for unseen components.
•
Your design may be contemporary
or traditionally inspired.
•
Judging criteria will include
functionality, timber selection,
construction and visual appeal. |
