Wonky Wine
Rack
kauri pine, radiata pine, mountain ash—all
from an engine crate
‘These
vacuum formed curved shelves with curved
drawers have been designed to hold wine.
When designing this wine rack I wanted
something that was going to be abstract
and totally different from any traditional
wine rack that I had ever seen. I made
the shelves by vacuum forming the shape.
Radiata pine was re-sawn to thin strips
approximately 1.5mm thick which were then
run through a drum sander to make the
laminations as thin as possible so they
would conform to the shape.
‘I then
cut a solid edge out of the hardwood to
the shape of the shelves and laminated
the outside faces of the shelves in the
hardwood to give the wine rack the look
of being cut out of a solid piece of wood.
The rear leg was made the same way but
because the curve was less severe I was
able to get away with having thicker laminates
of 2mm to get the shape I required.
‘I was
inspired by a carafe for the shape of
the shelves with the curves going in opposite
directions to give an interesting and
unique look. The contrast of the hardwood
still retaining some of its character
with the splits and the weathering the
timbers received while it was still a
crate along with the pale colour of the
kauri pine adds a unique variation to
the overall piece.’ |
