Book Tansu
'My daughter
started Year 7 this year and needed a
cabinet to keep her school books, files,
and other materials in. At the time I
was reading a book on Japanese carpentry
and tansu, and so the idea of making a
Book Tansu came to mind. I was looking
for a design with a contemporary touch,
the size of which would fit her room.
‘I used
a range of timbers bought from hardware
stores and wood shows—Tas oak, jarrah,
celery top pine, zebrano and western red
cedar.
‘The side
panels feature jarrah inlays representing
shoji lattice. The drawers have zebrano
inlays in a Japanese fan pattern. The
cabinet is a traditional mortise and tenon
construction with hand cut dovetails.
The hardware was bought in Japan during
my last holiday in Tokyo and came with
matching nails.’ |
