Cover Up
‘This
pair of hall tables have carved ‘tablecloths’
with mitred and dovetail splined overhangs
which allow the grain to be continuous
over the ends.
‘Each has a single drawer disguised
as the table’s front rail which
can be easily grasped from beneath to
slide out. The solid hardwood drawers
slide on wooden extensions.
‘All the
timber comes from the renovation of an
1890s shop in Geelong (wall studs and
floor joists). The only other materials
used are a few screws holding the drawer
runners, tops and drawer backs.
‘To allow
for any future repairs drawer fronts are
dovetailed, legs are fitted to rails with
sliding dovetails, finish is polyurethane
for durability inside and out as these
pieces are intended to work hard concealing
keys, papers, phones, etc in a hallway
as people pass.
‘The overall
design is intended to blend in with a
house of similar era to the material,
i.e. late Victorian.’ |
